Deconstructing Tragedy And The Definition Of The...

Deconstructing Tragedy and the Definition of the Protagonist’s Innocence In Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, Oedipus meets the Aristotelian definition of a tragic hero as divine fate and tragic flaws lead to his downfall. Oedipus’s tragic flaws like hubris, curiosity, and anger, contribute to his unfortunate fate. The components of a perfect tragedy as defined in Aristotle’s Poetics are at the center of Oedipus Rex. The play contains the elements of a perfect tragedy such as â€Å"imitation †¦ purification †¦ [and] recognition† (Poetics). Similarly, the movie Awakenings is a tragedy because it has elements of â€Å"imitation,† â€Å"recognition,† and â€Å"serious implications.† The protagonist Leonard Lowe is not a tragic hero†¦show more content†¦Oedipus’s anger highlights one of his tragic flaws. Oedipus first outburst of anger was when he killed his father, reminiscing, â€Å"I became angry and struck the coachman, and then I killed them all† (Sophocles 880 – 8). Oedipus’s anger continued throughout the play, especially when others inform him about his fate. When Teiresias accuses Oedipus of killing his father, Oedipus lashes out, saying â€Å"And who has taught you truth? Not your profession surely!† (Sophocles 388-389). This response is an attack on Teiresias and the principle of prophecies, as Oedipus exclaims Teirsias’s profession has not taught him truth. Oedipus angrily placed blame on his closest friend for his doomful fate, Creon, blaming, â€Å"No, certainly; kill you, not banish you† (Sophocles 687). Oedipus’s impulsive and extravagant anger make his angry characteristic all the more harmful. Oedipus’s anger eventually turned on himself, as he blinds himself in reaction to his foolishness and ignorance. Another aspect of Oedipus’s tragic flaw is his hubris. Initially it is cle ar Oedipus believes he is Thebe’s last hope, stating â€Å"I Oedipus whom all men call the Great† (Sophocles 6). Oedipus proves his hubris as he stands center-stage during almost the entire play. Creon tries to usher Oedipus off stage and tell him of the news, although Oedipus replies â€Å"Speak it to all: the grief I bear, I bear it more

My Leadership Philosophy Leadership Theories - 1793 Words

My leadership philosophy is consists of multiple leadership theories. Leadership theories can be leader-centered or follower-centered. Leadership theories focus on the leader’s personality and skill abilities. The psychodynamic approach is most similar to my leadership style because of its focus on personality. My leadership style is directive and task oriented. There are certain weaknesses in my leadership style which I know I can improve on. By incorporating the knowledge I have gained through this course I plan on applying the contingency theory to refine my leadership skills. In this essay I will describe my leadership philosophy which is comprised of the contingency theory, the path-goal theory, the leader-member exchange theory, and the psychodynamic approach theory and present a plan of action to improve my leadership and motivation skills. Culture Communication - Learning and Swot Analysis

Question: Describe the evalution of learning style and cuture communication? Answer: Introduction I am Huynh Hong Thuong, presently studying at Nottingham Trent University. I am from Vietnam which is a country of Southeast Asia. Currently I am pursuing my International Business course. Initially I studied in Asia Pacific College International Bilingual School with subjects, English and Vietnamese as my specialization. In my country, the Vietnamese subject is not very easy to study. After completing high school, it is a rule of our country, to choose a subject that the student is comfortable with to crack the entrance examination for University. However, I preferred not to study in my country. So, I decided to take the British Council exam to enter US and complete my higher studies. English is my favorite subject and I am much interested in learning English compared to other subjects. The reason I chose to move to US is due to its developed educational environment compared to my country. This would help me to make my life successful in upcoming future. Talking about my hobbies and likes, I love to travel and like fashion. I generally read fashion magazines and also love to do shopping during my leisure time. As discussed, I love travelling. Presently I travel around Asia but I have a plan to travel around Europe. I quite determined to fulfill my dream at any cost. I have decided to work hard until I get my dream to be true. Apart from travelling and shopping, I love helping people and supporting the community. For evidence, in my previous school, we had an activity to help the children who are born with some deformities in SOS village. The moment I saw those children I felt myself as lucky to have parents with no deformities. So, thought to help them by collecting some funds. However, I did not want to take the money from my parents and wanted to help them through my savings. Since, it was sunny day; I decided to sell food and water near the stadium which was quite expensive for the students like US along with some handmade cards. It was a nice activity and happy moment to help the needy children by buying milk, rice, stationary goods and some old clothes, without depending on my parents. After helping the children I really understood the worth of living and life. However, I was not aware of my future aim. Initially, I wanted to become a fashion designer but was not good at drawing. So later on I got inspired from my mother, as she is a business woman. Seeking her business skills and attitude, I always want to be successful like her. Thus, I chose business as my future aim. I have many dreams to fulfill after starting my career in business. The foremost important dream is to help the needy people, who are physically challenged or are socially unacceptable like prisoners etc. I am now quite aware that fulfilling this dream is not very easy, b ut working hard would definitely help me to reach that goal. Evaluation of Learning Style There are various ways of learning. Every person differs in their way of learning. According to the Learning-styles-online.com (2015), there are seven different learning styles Visual, Solitary, Social, Physical, Verbal and Aural. Among these seven, I generally prefer Visual and solitary way of learning. Being solitary helps me to concentrate and focus well on my own feelings and thoughts. It makes me feel independent and helps me to self- introspect. I spend time on reflecting my past events to analyze and assess my challenges and accomplishments. I read self-help books and attend self-development workshops to develop more clear understanding about self. While self-studying, I use lots of images and system diagrams which help to remember the concepts and links between each part. This visual technique helps me to memorize the concepts easily. At home I usually write sticky notes and paste it near my mirror so that I can see my activities easily. To improve my English I usually read books, watch movies and listen to English songs, however, many people say that it is not the right way of practicing English language. Since the technique relies on visualization it helps me to improve my behavior. For instance, initially I use to think a lot after doing a small mistake, or if I say anything wrong. But now, after doing any mistake, I feel that nobody is perfect in this world, but have to be aware so that I dont repeat the same next time. I have become more conscious. Swot Analysis Every person has different personalities and it is very important to understand the strength and weaknesses of self through experience. SWOT analysis helps to improve self. This analysis helps to archive goals. Talking about my strength, I usually listen properly to the comments of other people and then give my opinion. This helps me to work effectively in team with my peers in college. This also helps me to communicate effectively with other students and also teachers. I am completely committed towards the success and career development. However, there exist few weaknesses. For instance, I get nervous while expressing my ideas and communicating my thoughts in front of whole class. This public speaking fear generally takes away my passion towards presentation. Sometimes, I become too compulsive for completing my work, this make me stressed out and also hampers my work quality. Analyzing my weakness, I think there are various opportunities for me in UK like I have the opportunity to attend conferences and develop my skills and knowledge. Further attending some seminars will also help me to improve my attitude and English. In my class there are many students who are good speakers. They belong to UK itself and unlike me they are very much accustomed with the language and bold in public speaking. This is a threat to me, as while presenting they usually score good as I lack in effective communication. Solution To Weakness To solve my weakness that is stage fear or public speaking fear, I have come across few strategies that would help me to solve the issues: Strategies before presentation: Chatting with the friends Developing confidence that I can do it Remembering the points like starting statements, ending statements, necessary points Practicing the points in front of mirror Strategies just before the presentation: Trying to be relaxed by listening to music Engaging self towards concentrating on own ideas Strategies while presenting: Giving smile and making eye contact with the audience before starting the presentation Starting the presentation with a general talk Strategies for modulating the voice tempo: Listening to the voice modulation of good speakers Record the timing of my presentation make changes accordingly Issues Related To Culture Diversity Culture can be defined as the man-made part of the environment in which a group of individuals live together. The Cultural environment of every group makes the members of a group socialize with each other. A group of students belonging to a nationality or religion also have a particular group culture in them, which makes them socialize and interact with each other (Smucker, 1982). This phenomenon is seen quite commonly in every education institute including mine. These cultural differences may further lead to communication barriers between the students from diverse backgrounds, if not timely resolved. This also leads to group formations within the class, wherein few set of student are not ready to do a group assignment with other set of students belonging to a different cultural back ground. This seems to be very unhealthy for the overall team spirit and unity of a class of students. In my classroom, I usually see students criticizing the instructors if they feel that something is incorrect. I feel that the some of the students are extremely obnoxious, unnerving, brash and rude with me sometimes. This make me feel isolated from the group sometimes. I am usually calm in the classroom and few students feel that I am boring (Tal and Kedmi, 2006). Sometimes I feel disengaged in a group when teaches conducts few instructional methods like presentation, group discussion etc. I feel afraid of speaking in the class as major of them belong to other culture unlike me. Language difference is also another issue that sometimes leaves me alone with my issues. I generally feel unwelcomed and experience discrimination while working in a team. Few students feel that we Vietnamese students are not intelligent (Fish, 2015). Importance of Effective Interpersonal And Communication Skills Interpersonal communication is the process that is generally used for communicating own feeling, thoughts and ideas with others. Thus, it can be said that the interpersonal communication skills is the learned behavior that can be improved via reflection, feedback, practice and knowledge (Smart, 2006). Many researches show that around 90% of the conflicts happen due to faulty communication among the receiver and the sender. Therefore, it is very much important to understand the communication styles which help to reduce the conflict that occurs due to miscommunication. Good interpersonal and communication skills help to improve the performance in a team and also improve the bonding with the other people in a team (Froyd, n.d.). Thinking from the future perspective, good interpersonal and communication skills is and edge towards getting better job and also it is ladder to gain better position in an organization in future. Effective communication also helps to decrease the friction among the team members, reduce mistakes and also wastage of time. Effective interpersonal and communication skills also help to develop a strong bonding with others in the class and also in a team (flexstudy.com, n.d.). Since I am too much committed towards becoming a successful business professional in future this effective communication and interpersonal skills would help not only to get a good job but also gain success in future. It also encourages good working relationship and also communicate own ideas and purposes in a good way. This will help me to inspire others and build confidence in self. Action Plan For Overcoming My Weakness Looking at my present situation, my weakest area is my confidence, since I have not much experience of meeting new people around and share my thoughts and ideas. This is something which I hope to improve while studying in Nottingham Trent University. I have decided to follow the below mentioned action plan: To be systematic and organized Controlling own life To reduce impulsiveness through exercise To achieve best grades in each of my semester To make friends by developing my interpersonal and communication skills To have a enjoyable and successful career To meet these goals I will follow the below steps: Spend extra time with the mentors or the professors to know my weakness and improve on those. Spend more time in University library, taking notes and developing my career. Since I prefer solitary way of learning, I would like to transform that into group learning which would help me to understand opinion and thoughts of other students and also develop friends Complete all the tasks within the given duration Gain confidence by believing in self and also find balance between social life and also study. Action Plan For Achieving Cultural Congruency And Respecting Other Cultures The ideology of building effective cultural congruency and respecting each others cultures is very much essential for the international students like me. Students studying language studies or otherwise, are exposed to international cultures. They have to make persistent efforts to learn a foreign language and adapt a varied dialect in order to communicate easily with students and people from different religions, countries having different cultural backgrounds. I have learned and applied this concept of cultural congruency in my student life. I have deliberately tried to overcome the cultural barriers between my fellow friends who come from diverse backgrounds. We international students have to stay in college hostels while pursuing of our higher education studies. Moreover, Students opting for international studies, study in a multicultural and multi linguistic environment. It is very important for theses students to move ahead of these stereotypes and develop good relations with people from different countries and backgrounds The educational institutes of todays age may include cultural education in addition to their regular curriculum of students. These actions would help impart cultural education to the students and help them adjust in cross cultural surroundings during their future endeavors. Respecting cross-cultural values and others religion are important traits that may be imbibed in the students at an early age. Our educational institute has several team building exercises that help the students like me coming from diverse backgrounds to mix up with the local students of the college. More the interaction with the local students, higher would be the confidence levels as well as the language skills of outside state students. Benefit Expected On Implementation Of The Action Plan 1. Improvement in my confidence level My confidence level with regards to my own academic voice is expected to improve a lot with the implementation of the above discussed action plan. I am looking forward to achieve as relatively strong command on English langue and people skill that would boost my confidence while mingling with my friends and teachers. Improvement in speech I would definitely be improvising on my English ascent with more and more interactions with my American friends that would make my speech polished. Improvement in reading and writing activities I have decided to devote specific hours to reading activities, that would involve extensive reading of newspapers, magazines, and also travelogues that I love to read. This would polish my English language. Also I would love to read out a full lesson or story in fluent and improved English with accurate punctuation marks. Respecting the students coming from cross-cultural back grounds and understanding their perspectives and cultures Additional Exposure to the cross-cultural learning environment would defiantly make me more understanding person; a person whose horizons have widened and one who can easily see the world with divergent perspectives. Overcoming the cultural stereo types Many of the people living in this world are badly affected by several stereotypes which are not so easy to be erased from their mind, although untrue. More interaction with the students from different background than mine would definitely help me overcoming few of the stereo types that I believe in. Taking Better control of my life The Actions plans would overall help me to take better control of myself and my life. These action plans would make me highly systematic and organized, molding me in to an efficient person, who always seeks to see a bigger picture, before behaving impulsively. Conclusion In conclusion, this paper reflects my thoughts on culture communication and learning. This report highlights my interests and education aim. It also evaluates my learning style which is visual and solitary. To identify the weakness and threat, the SWOT analysis tool is used which would help to develop my skills, knowledge and attitude. A proper action plan is developed, which discusses my aim and strategies that I have to focus on and develop in this year itself. References Fish, L. (2015). Welfare Programs Essays - Federal Assistance In The United States

Welfare Programs Welfare is a government program that provides money, medical care, food, housing, and other things that people need in order to survive. People who can receive help from these welfare programs are children, elders, disabled, and others who cannot support their families on their current income. Another name for welfare is public assistance. There are many organizations that supply this public assistance. Such as Salvation Army and other groups. Public assistance benefits help many people who live below the poverty line, an income level is established for families. If your income is below this you would be eligible to receive this help. Welfare in the United States Federal and state governments in the Unites States serve the poor people through about 60 public assistance programs. Most people receive help through one of the four major programs. These programs are Medicaid, Aid to families with dependant Children, Social Security, or Supplemental Security, or the food stamps program. I will discuss the four programs individually. Medicaid provides free medical care to the poor people. Funds vary from state to state. In some situations, people who may be able to pay daily needs, but can't afford large medical bills may also be able to receive Medicaid. Some services paid for are bills such as doctor's visits and nursing home care. Most Medicaid funding comes from the federal government. The rest is supplied by the state. Each state runs their own Medicaid program. A.F.D.C. provides cash benefits to dependent children and the parents or the guardians taking care of them. Most families that qualify for A.F.D.C. have just one parent in the home. About 80 percent of these families are headed by a woman. A.F.D.C. also pays benefits to two-parent families if both parents are unemployed. Most A.F.D.C. funding comes from the federal government. The states provide the rest of the money and administer the program. The sizes of families' payment vary from state to state. Next is Social Security Income. This provides financial Aid to people in need who are at least 65 years old, blind, or disabled. The federal government finances and administers social security income programs in most states, though some states supply the federal payment and are able to run their own programs. Finally, the Food Stamp Program helps low-income households buy more and better food than they could otherwise afford. Each participating household receives a certain number of coupons called food stamps. The stamps are issued by the federal government. The number of stamps a household receives varies with the family's size, income, and expenses. Cooperating grocery stores accept the stamps like money for food purchases only. There are other programs such as energy assistance and public housing. Energy assistance, which is federally financed but administered by the states, helps people pay fuel bills. Public housing provides low cost rental apartments in government owned buildings. State and local governments fund and administer their own general assistance programs. These programs provide financial aid for needy people who do not qualify for other types of welfare. People waiting to receive assistance from other programs also may get temporary emergency aid from general assistance. Back in the early days, welfare resembled the English system. Social governments were responsible for helping the poor. But the colonies and later the states, sometimes helped the local government provide aid. The first federal welfare program, began after the Revolutionary War, they provided pensions to war veterans. During the Civil War these pensions were expanded to cover soldiers' widows and orphans. In the early 1900's, primary responsibility for providing welfare benefits shifted from local to state governments. During these years, states enacted programs to aid dependent children and the elderly. The criticisms of welfare ranges over a number of social and economic issues. Some people criticize welfare programs for not providing high enough benefits to eliminate poverty. Spending on welfare would have to increase greatly to eliminate poverty, and many people believe the cost is already too high. Many critics of the welfare system charge that providing a steady income to needy people encourages idleness. Actually, most welfare benefits go to elderly, blind, and disabled people and mothers with young children. But welfare does discourage some recipients from working harder by reducing benefits if their income increases. Many people also criticize the welfare system for being too complex and costly to administer. Each program has its own eligibility requirements and ways of calculating benefits, and these rules vary from state to state. Public officials collect detailed information about applicants to determine their eligibility for benefits. This process is time-consuming and
